How Much Money You Save When You Stop Drinking

Tämä artikkeli on toistaiseksi vain englanniksi.
The price you can see
You probably know roughly what a single drink costs. A supermarket beer is cheap enough to ignore, a cocktail out is not, and your weekly total sits somewhere you would rather not calculate. Most people who finally do the math underestimate first and then get a small shock. The receipt price, though, is only the entry fee.
Unbottle asks what you pay per standard drink for a reason. That single number, multiplied by your real week, is where the story starts. Everything else in this article builds on it.
Everything drinking orders on the side
Alcohol rarely travels alone. There is the round you bought because someone bought you one, and the taxi home because driving was out. There is the kebab at 1am, then the delivery the next afternoon because cooking felt impossible. Quieter losses hide behind those. A gym membership unused on a hungover Saturday, or a day of annual leave burned on recovery. None of it shows up on the bar tab, and together it often costs more than the drinks did.
How fast it compounds
Weekly drink money looks small, but it grows fast. A modest bar night every week adds up, over a year, to roughly the price of a decent holiday. A heavier routine can quietly swallow the equivalent of a used car. Run your own numbers once, with your real week, and the yearly figure is usually the one that stings. The good news is that the same math works in reverse, and just as fast, whether you cut down to a few drinks a week or to none at all. Even halving a heavy week moves the yearly total dramatically.
Your app keeps the score
Unbottle tracks the money you save for every drink you do not have, based on the price you told it your drinks cost. That counter does something a bank balance cannot, because every step upward maps to a specific choice you made. Skipping the Tuesday wine counts, and so does keeping the Friday beer with friends and stopping at one. The counter does not care which path you are on. Either way, fewer drinks means a bigger number.
Check it on a dull Wednesday when motivation runs thin. A concrete number does more for your resolve than a vague intention.
What people do with the savings
Ask people a year in and the answers are pleasingly ordinary. Some pay down a credit card that had been stuck at the same balance for years. Others build a pot for a trip, or upgrade something they use daily, like proper running shoes. A popular trick is moving the week's drink money into a separate account every Sunday, where it stays visible and out of the household budget. Money that used to evaporate on Friday nights turns into something you can point at. Whatever the target, choose it on purpose.
The win underneath the money
The savings are real, but they are also a proxy. Each drink not had is an evening you remember and a morning you got to use. Watch the counter climb for a few months and the old habit becomes hard to defend to yourself. Give the total a destination and it becomes something to work toward. Whether you are drinking less or not at all, this is the one benefit you can measure exactly, and it starts counting from your very first skipped drink.
